The surname of WAILE was of two-fold origin. Firstly it was a locational name 'of Prioer de Wale' a small spot in Guernsey and there is also a place of Wales, a parish ten miles from Sheffield, in the West Riding of Yorkshire, from where the original bearer of the name may have lived. Local surnames, by far the largest group, derived from a place name where the man held land or from the place from which he had come, or where he actually lived. These local surnames were originally preceded by a preposition such as "de", "atte", "by" or "in". The names may derive from a manor held, from working in a religious dwelling or from literally living by a wood or marsh or by a stream. The earliest hereditary surnames in England are found shortly after the Norman Conquest of 1066 and are of Norman French origin rather than native English. On the arrival of the Normans they identified themselves by references to the estates from which they came in northern France. These names moved rapidly on with their bearers into Scotland and Ireland. Others of the Norman Invaders took names from the estates in England which they had newly acquired. The earliest of the name on record appears to be WALO (without surname) who was listed as a tenant in the Domesday Book of 1066. Robert filus Wales appears in Berkshire in the year 1198. The name was also occasionally used as a nickname meaning a foreigner, or a well-liked person, and was derived from the Old English word WAHL.
Other records of the name mention William Wale, 1273 County Lincolnshire. Thomas Wale of Northumberland, was documented during the reign of Edward III (1327-1377) and Cecelia de Wales of Yorkshire, was listed in the Yorkshire Poll Tax of 1379. Later instances of the name record that a certain John Wales of Furness, was listed in the Wills at Chester in 1661.
Richard Wale and Ann Tringham were married at St. George's, Hanover Square, London in the year 1808.
The associated arms are recorded in Sir Bernard Burkes General Armory. Ulster King of Arms in 1884.
