Szabo Coat of Arms / Szabo Family Crest

This Hungarian surname of SZABO was an occupational name for a tailor. The tailor was an important part of medieval life, and in the parts of Europe where the winter weather was severe everyone needed the 'great cloak' required by nobles or other warm clothing which was made by the KREJCI, whose talent commanded respect. In these times clothes made the man, showing everyone the class in which he belonged and the deference due to him. Laws restricted the lower classes from wearing the clothes of their 'betters'. In almost all European countries the family name derived from the occupation as a tailor became a popular one. The Hungarian language is quite distinct from its Germanic and Slavonic neighbours, and is of Finno-Ugric rather than European origin, and so it is related to Finnish. However, the strongest cultural influence in historical times has been German, and the pattern of Hungarian surnames is similar to that found in Germany and Austria. In the 19th century, surnames ending in 'Y' came to be considered more aristocratic than those ending in 'I', although it has been shown that the alternation between these two letters depended on the whim of a clerk, and had no connection with rank. A very famous notable of this name was VIOLETTE SZABO (nee Bushell)born in l92l. She was a secret agent, dropped into France after D-Day (June 6th l944) for the F Section of the Special Operations Executive (SOE). Her job was to foster resistance among civilians under Nazi occupation and divert attention. Her actions stand among the most brilliant acts of war heroism and after the war a film was made of her exploits "Carve Her Name With Pride" starring Virginia McKenna. She was caught whilst covering her comrades' escape, single handedly holding a Panzer division at bay until her last shot was fired. She was taken to the notorious Ravensbruck concentration camp where she was tortured and eventually shot through the back of the neck. Hungarian heraldry shows a marked preference for charges or devices associated with the Turkish wars which were a feature of Hungarian history from the 15th to the 18th centuries. A great number of all Hungarian armorial bearings feature a decapitated Turk's head, moustached and turbanned. Sabres, swords and lances are brandished and lions, gryphons or horsemen are all depicted in a fiery and war-like manner.
