This Scottish surname PATILLO is from either of the two places named Pittilloch near Freuchie in Fife, or from Glenfarg in Perthshire. Ade de Petillok who is mentioned in a memo of 1295, is probably the same man who appears in Perth in 1305 as a juror on an inquisition. William de Pettillok had a charter of the lands of Gibblotistoun in Fife, from Robert I and John de Pyttylok held land in Portyncrag in 1433. A Robert Pittilloch, a Dundee man of humble rank, raised recruits for the French service in the neighbourhood of Dundee in 1423-1424. He accompanied them to France, entered the French service becoming commander of the unit. In 1452 he obtained letters of naturalization. As Robert Pettillo he was one of the Ambassadors accredited to James 11. to the kings of France and Castile, and in records relating to the Scots Guards in France he appears as Robin Petit Lo. He died in 1460. Robert Pettillo was documented as the burgess of Perth in 1567, and he owned land in Kynnochtry in 1585. Alexander Pattillo was a member of the Huntley Volunteers in 1798 and Robert Pittilloch was author of 'Tracts Legal and Historical' in 1827. The use of fixed surnames or descriptive names appears to have commenced in France about the year 1000, and such names were introduced into Scotland, through the Normans a little over a hundred year later. At a general council in Forfar in 1061, during the reign of Malcolm Ceannmor (1057-1093) the latter directed his chief subjects, after the custom of other nations, to adopt surnames from their territorial possessions, and there created 'The first erlis that euir was in Scotland'. In the Middle Ages heraldry came into use as a practical matter. It originated in the devices used to distinguish the armoured warriors in tournament and war, and was also placed on seals as marks of identity. As far as records show, true heraldry began in the middle of the 12th century, and appeared almost simultaneously in several countries of Western Europe.
