In Slavic this name was evidently used to denote any foreigner, referring to an inability to speak intelligibly. The name has numerous variant spellings which include NEMTSOV, NUMCHUCK, NIEMIEC, NEMEC, and NIEMCZYK. A notable member of the name is Joe Willie NAMATH, born in 1943, the American football player, born in Beaver Halls, Pennsylvania, known as 'Broadway Joe' for his high living off the field.
