  Millette Coat of Arms / Millette Family CrestThe surname of MILLETTE was a name that was brought into England in the wake of the Norman Invasion of 1066, and was of the occupational group of surnames meaning a grower or seller of millet or panic grass. During the 13th and 14th centuries it became a popular girl's name in the form of Millicent, especially in the Yorkshire area. The name is also spelt MILLET, MILOT, MYLOTE and MILLOT. The earliest of the name on record appears to be Richard filius Milot, who was recorded in County Nottingham in 1273. John Milot was documented in the same year in County Huntingdonshire, and Willelmus Melot of Yorkshire was listed in the Yorkshire Poll Tax of 1379. John Mylote was mentioned in County Yorkshire in 1380. Later instances of the name include William Melot of County Durham, 1433, and Robert Millot of Durham was listed in 1512. William Millet and Beatrice Vodell were married at St. Michael, Cornhill, London in 1696. An eminent member of the name was Jean Francois Millet (1814-1875) the French painter born in Grouchy, near Greville. He worked on the farm with his father, a peasant, but showing a talent for art, he was placed under a painter at Cherbourg in 1832. In 1837, he went to Paris, achieving recognition in 1844 at the Salon. The 1848 Revolution and poverty drove him from Paris to the forest of Fontainebleau, living much like the peasants around him, and he painted the rustic life of France with much sympathy. He received little public notice, and was never well off, but after the Great Exhibition of 1867 in Paris, in which nine of his works were on show, his merit came to be recognized, and he was awarded the Legion d'honneur. A notable member of the name was William Franklyn MELLOTT, born 14th August, 1988. He was a Clergyman and Publisher, and his appointments included Ohio Distributer, New Chain Reference Bible, from 1946. The publisher of Spiritual Vitamin Booklets (1949) and violinist with the Wooster Symphony Orchestra. He was the author of numerous articles. |
