The earliest of the name on record appears to be Richard filius Milot, who was recorded in County Nottingham in 1273. In 1837, he went to Paris, achieving recognition in 1844 at the Salon. The 1848 Revolution and poverty drove him from Paris to the forest of Fontainebleau, living much like the peasants around him, and he painted the rustic life of France with much sympathy. He received little public notice, and was never well off, but after the Great Exhibition of 1867 in Paris, in which nine of his works were on show, his merit came to be recognized, and he was awarded the Legion d'honneur.
