This Spanish surname of MIEGEL was originally from the Middle English given name MICHAEL. This is ultimately from the Hebrew MICHA-EL 'Who is like God?', a name borne by various minor biblical characters as well as by an archangel, the protector of Israel (Dan. 10:13). In Christian tradition, MICHAEL was regarded as the warrior archangel, conqueror of Satan, and the given name was correspondingly popular throughout Europe, especially in knightly and military families. The name has numerous variants which include MIGUEL, MICHEAU, MICHAL, CHONET, CHONILLON, MICHIELETTI, MICHALKE, MICHELK, MIKO, MICHALEC and CHELAZZI, to name but a few. In the 8th century, Spain fell under the control of the Moors, and this influence, which lasted into the 12th century, has also left its mark on Hispanic surnames. A few names are based directly on Arabic personal names. The majority of Spanish occupational and nickname surnames, however, are based on ordinary Spanish derivatives. In Spain identifying patronymics are to be found as early as the mid-9th century, but these changed with each generation, and hereditary surnames seem to have come in slightly later in Spain than in England and France. As well as the names of the traditional major saints of the Christian Church, many of the most common Spanish surnames are derived from personal names of Germanic origin. For the most part these names are characteristically Hispanic. They derive from the language of the Visigoths, who controlled Spain between the mid-5th and early 8th centuries. A notable member of the name was MIGUEL, properly MIGUEL Maria Evaristo de Branganca (1802-66) king of Portugal, born in Lisbon, the third son of King John VI. He plotted (1824) to overthrow the constitutional form of government granted by his father; but was banished with his mother, his chief abettor. On John's death in 1826 the throne devolved upon MIGUEL's elder brother Pedro I, emperor of Brzil; he however, resigned it in favour of his daughter, Maria de Gloria, making MIGUEL regent; MIGUEL summoned a cortes, which proclaimed him king in 1828.
