Mascucci Coat of Arms / Mascucci Family Crest

The surname of MASCUCCI was a Spanish religious byname, from a vernacular form of the Latin word MESSIAS (Messiah). The name was adopted by Ashkenazic Jews, a name taken as an expression of hope for the coming of the Messiah. The name is also spelt MEJIA, MEIJIAS, MEGIA, MEGIAS, MASCHIACH and MASCHIA. Between 1880 and 1914, almost three million Jews left Eastern Europe, representing the most extensive migration in Jewish history since the expulsion of Jews from Spain at the end of the 15th century. Most of the emigrants fled from Russia, where pogroms had raged, and where the laws of Czar Alexander III had oppressed Jewish life. Most of the emigrants departed from Hamburg and went to the United States, but some emigrated to Australia, Argentina, Brazil, Canada and South Africa. While the vast majority of the immigrants to America came through Ellis Island from 1907 to 1914 thousands of East European Jews participated in a little known episode in American Jewish history. They migrated through the port of Galveston, Texas and then were routed to towns throughout the Midwest where lodging and jobs awaited them. In Spain identifying patronymics are to be found as early as the mid-9th century, but these changed with each generation, and hereditary surnames seem to have come in slightly later in Spain than in England and France. As well as the names of the traditional major saints of the Christian Church, many of the most common Spanish surnames are derived from personal names of Germanic origin. For the most part these names are characteristically Hispanic. They derive from the language of the Visigoths, who controlled Spain between the mid-5th and early 8th centuries. A notable member of the name was Salvador Jose MEJIA, who was born on the 22nd April in 1905. He was an American dentist in private practice, and made several professional visits to the Middle East to attend Royal patients in Arabia, Saudi Arabia and the Yemen. He was sometimes Instructor of General Anatomy at the University of California. He resided in California in the United States of America.
