It was a Portugese topographic name for someone who lived by a large, flat rock or a slab of stone. The name was derived from the Old Portugese LAJA. The name is also spelt LAG, LAGGE and LAGES. The name is also found in the old barony of LAG in the parish of Dunscore, Dumfriesshire. Early records of the name mention Robert de LAGE, who had a charter of lands of Neatherhome, from David II in 1358. Surnames as we know them today were first assumed in Europe from the 11th to the 15th Century. The employment in the use of a second name was a custom that was first introduced from the Normans.
