The associated coat of arms for this name are recorded in J.B Rietstaps Armorial General. Illustrated by V & H.V Rolland's. This monumental work took 23 years to complete and 85,000 coats of Arms are included in this work. This surname of KUMP was a German topographic name for someone who lived in or near a field or expanse of open country, or else in the countryside as opposed to a town. The name was derived from the Old French word CHAMP (field), and was rendered in medieval documents in the Latin form CAMPUS. The name is also spelt CHAMP, CAMP, DECHAMP, KAMPER, KAMPMANN, KEMPER and KAMPSTRA to name but a few. During the Middle Ages, the ordinary warriors or soldiers adopted such names as Kamp, Kemp or Kemper, meaning 'war protection'. During the 17th century surnames were brought to Britain, North America and southern Africa by French Huguenot exiles. The Huguenots were French Protestants, and in 1572 large numbers of them were massacred in Paris on the orders of Queen Catherine de'Medici. Many of the survivors sought refuge in England and elsewhere. Although the Edict of Nantes (1598) officially guaranteed religious toleration, persecution continued, and the Edict was revoked by Louis XIV in 1685. It was then the trickle of emigration became a flood. Many migrated to England, while others joined groups of Dutch Protestants settling around the Cape of Good Hope. Others sailed across the Atlantic to establish themselves in North America. Early records of the name in England mention Eadulf Cempa documented in the year 902 in Wales. Edmund Kemp, was recorded in the year 1100 in the County of Norfolk. Edward Kempe was documented in the year 1273, and Thomas Kemp of Yorkshire, was listed in the Yorkshire Poll Tax of 1379. William Kemp was burgess of Edinburgh in 1423. Donald Kemp was the burgess of Dingwell in 1613. A notable member of the name was John Kemp (1380-1454) the English prelate born in Olantigh, near Ashford in Kent. He became fellow of Merton College, Oxford, bishop of Rochester (1419) and of Chichester and London (1421), chancellor and archbishop of York in 1426, and archbishop of Canterbury in 1452.
