Local names usually denoted where a man held land, and indicated where he actually lived. Many factors contributed to the establishment of a surname system. Early records of the name mention Johannes de Holewaye, 1273 County Wiltshire. William de Holewaye, was documented in the County of Warwickshire, ibid.
