  Harder Coat of Arms / Harder Family CrestThe surname of HARDER was derived from the Old English word 'hardi' a nickname for a brave and courageous man. The name was taken to Scotland by settlers in the early 12th century. William Hardy of Lanarkshire, was documented in the year 1296. Thomas Hardy of Yorkshire, was listed in the Yorkshire Poll Tax of 1379. The use of fixed surnames or descriptive names appears to have commenced in France about the year 1000, and such names were introduced into Scotland through the Normans a little over one hundred years later, although the custom of using them was by no means common for many years afterwards. During the reign of Malcolm Ceannmor (1057-1093) the latter directed his chief subjects, after the custom of other nations, to adopt surnames from their territorial possessions, and there created 'The first erlis that euir was in Scotland'. Most of the European surnames in countries such as England, Scotland and France were formed in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. A notable member of the name was James Keir Hardie (1856-1915) the Scottish Labour leader, one of the founders of the Labour party, born near Holytown, Lanarkshire. He worked in a coal-pit from childhood. Victimized as champion of the miners (whom he organized) he moved to Cumnock and became a journalist. He started and edited 'The Labour Leader' and strongly opposed Liberal influence of the trade unions. |
