Glisson Coat of Arms / Glisson Family Crest

Glisson Coat of Arms / Glisson Family Crest

The associated coat of arms for the name GLISSON are recorded in Sir Bernard Burkes General Armory. Ulster King of Arms in 1884. Registered in County Somerset. The name was derived from the Gaelic O'Glasain or O'Gliasain. The anglicized form of this name in County Kerry is Glissane. The ancient origins of the forebears of this sept were in the county of Cork, but the sept established itself in Owney and Arra barony, County Tipperary. At the end of the last century about one half of all the Gleeson families in Ireland still resided in County Tipperary, and the greater part of the rest lived in Munster. Gleeson families are still numerous in the region of Nenagh, near their early homeland. The main body of the sept were and mainly still are located in Lower Ormand. Mainly families of the name still retain the old spelling with the 'O' prefix. Ireland was one of the earliest countries to evolve a system of hereditary surnames: they came into being fairly generally in the eleventh century, and indeed a few were formed before the year 1000. The name can occasionally be found as Gleason. At first the coat of arms was a practical matter which served a function on the battlefield and in tournaments. With his helmet covering his face and armour encasing the knight from head to foot, the only means of identification for his followers, was the insignia painted on his shield and embroidered on his surcoat, the draped and flowing garment worn over the armour. A notable member of the name was Francis GLISSON (circa.1597-1677) the English physician and anatomist. The place and exact date of his birth are unknown, but he matriculated at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge in 1617. He remained in Cambridge as a fellow and teacher of Greek, then turned to medicine, obtaining his MD in 1634. He was a fellow of the Royal Society and president of the Royal College of Physicians of London.
