Gandolfi Coat of Arms / Gandolfi Family Crest

The associated coat of arms for this name are recorded in J.B Rietstaps Armorial General. Illustrated by V & H.V Rolland's. This Monumental work took 23 years to complete and 85,000 coats of Arms are included in this work. The Italian surname of GANDOLFI was a baptismal name meaning 'the descendant of GANDOLFO' (charm, wolf). The name is predominantly associated with the regions of Piemonte, Liguria and Lombardy. This name of GANDOLFI was first found in Lombardy, a region of Italy originally settled by German tribes. The name has been documented in Italy since the 8th century, and GANDOLFUS (without surname) was recorded in Farfa, near Sabina in 763. In 1330 Andrea GANDOLFI was a doctor of law. The origins of Italian surnames are not clear, and much work remains to be done on medieval Italian records. It seems that fixed bynames, in some cases hereditary, were in use in the Venetian Republic by the end of the 10th century. Surnames as we know them today were first assumed in Europe from the 11th to the 15th Century. The employment in the use of a second name was a custom that was first introduced from the Normans. They themselves had not long before adopted them. It became, in course of time, a mark of gentler blood, and it was deemed a disgrace for gentlemen to have but one single name, as the meaner sort had. At first the coat of arms was a practical matter which served a function on the battlefield and in tournaments. With his helmet covering his face, and armour encasing the knight from head to foot, the only means of identification for his followers, was the insignia painted on his shield and embroidered on his surcoat, the flowing and draped garment worn over the armour. Other records of the name include the GANDOLFI family of Piemonte, who originally came from Porto-Manrizio in the 17th century. Accellino GANDOLFI was an envoy to Francia and governor of Chieri, and his son Carlo was governor of Fossano. A member of the family became archbishop of Cagliari and died in 1748.
