Elliot Coat of Arms / Elliot Family Crest

The Elliots are a border clan , although many of the family, it is alleged, took their name from the village of Eliot in Forfarshire. The Elliots of Redheugh were recognised as the principal family. The Elliots of Stobs originated in the 16th century and in 1666 Gilbert Elliot of Stobs was created a baronet of Nova Scotia. George, the youngest son of the 3rd baronet, was born in 1718. He entered the army and served in the War of the Austrian Succession and was wounded at the Battle of Dettigen. He was Governor of Gibralter when,in 1779, Spain and France laid seige to that important fortress. His defence of the Rock is one of the most glorious achievements in history. An interesting member of the family name was Grace Dalrymple Elliott, the courtesan, who was born in Scotland in 1758, the daughter of an Edinburgh advocate. In 1771, she married Sir John Elliott MD, who divorced her in 1774. She was the mistress successively or simultaneously of Lord Valentinia, Lord Cholmondley, The Prince of Wales and many others. She died in 1823 in Sevres, leaving an interesting but untrustworthy 'Journal of My Life during the Revolution'. Walter Elliot (1888-1958) was the Scottish politician, and Conservative MP for Lanark from 1918 until 1923. He was secretary of state for Scotland, and minster of health. He was also a writer and broadcaster. His wife, Baroness Katharine of Harwood, was created Scotland's first life peeress in October 1958. Alba, the country which became Scotland, was once shared by four races; the Picts who controlled most of the land north of the Central Belt; the Britons, who had their capital at Dumbarton and held sway over the south west, including modern Cumbria; the Angles, who were Germanic in origin and annexed much of the Eastern Borders in the seventh century, and the Scots. The latter came to Alba from the north of Ireland late in the 5th century to establish a colony in present day Argyll, which they named Dalriada, after their homeland. The Latin name SCOTTI simply means a Gaelic speaker.
