Disher Coat of Arms / Disher Family Crest

This surname of DISHER is an occupational name 'one who makes dishes in pewter' This name was passed over to America with the Puritans. Earlier instances of the name mention:

John le Discher - l273 Oxford. Walter le Dissher - county Somerset l300. Richard Disher married Lucy Kemis in London in l608. Hector Moore married Elizabeth Disher in Canterbury in l693.

In London dishers were makers of wooden measures for wine and ale who had to have each a mark of his own placed on the bottom of each measure, samples of the marks to be submitted to the Chamberlain. They were also called 'turnours' (John, Thomas le Turnour) l347. American surnames comprise of surnames found in every country throughout the world, many with differences in spelling not seen in the old country due to the inability of clerks and Government officials to record correctly the names given them by unschooled immigrants not familiar with the English, French, German, Portugese, Dutch or Spanish languages currently used in the Port of entry or the part of the country where they settled. When an immigrant arriving in America with little knowledge of English gave his name verbally to the officials, it was written down by them as they heard it, and being thereby 'official' it was often accepted by the immigrant himself as the correct American rendering of his name. The associated coat of arms is recorded in Sir Bernard Burkes General Armory. Ulster King of Arms in 1884.
