Many medieval coats of arms had family mottos. Often times the motto had some significance to a past family member with a certain surname. The motto could have come about from a certain achievement, or even possibly had something to do with the location the family lived in. There were many reasons why a motto could have come to exist. The mottoes were usually written above the crest of the coat of arms, but not always. With Scottish Clan Badges or Buckles, the motto is usually curved inside the buckle, with the crest in the middle of the buckle.
