First to settlewas an Elizabethan Captain who obtained O'Moore lands in Leix, which he managed to retain in spite of constant feuds with the dispossessed owners. This family was amont the chief gentlemen of Leix in 1598; one was M.P.s for Maryborough in 1613. The best known Barrington family came with Cromwell: they settled in Limerick in 1692.
