Werre Coat of Arms / Werre Family Crest

Werre Coat of Arms / Werre Family Crest

The surname of WERRE was an old Gaelic personal name 'the son of Guaire' meaning one who was proud. A very ancient family, they are part of the Siol Alpine the eponymous Godfrey being brother to Fingon, great-grandson of King Kenneth MacAlpine (9th century). It is also said that, on the female line, they can claim St. Columba as an ancestor. John M'Goyre of Wlua witnessed a charter by John of Yle, earl of Ross in 1463. In the royal confirmation of this charter his name appears as M'Geir de Ulva, and in the Gaelic genealogical manuscript of 1467 the name appears again as M'Guaire. Donald McGillecallum McGoore was a tenant of Kyllewane in Kintyre in 1506, and Gillecallum McNeill McQuhore was also a tenant at this place in the same year. Cathel M'Quhorie and Archibald M'Quhoire were two bowmen shipped at Lochkerran in 1627 for service in France. Alba, the country which became Scotland, was once shared by four races; the Picts who controlled most of the land north of the Central Belt; the Britons, who had their capital at Dumbarton and held sway over the south west, including modern Cumbria; the Angles, who were Germanic in origin and annexed much of the Eastern Borders in the seventh century, and the Scots. The latter came to Alba from the north of Ireland late in the 5th century to establish a colony in present day Argyll, which they named Dalriada, after their homeland. The Latin name SCOTTI simply means a Gaelic speaker. Hector M'Gourie was a tenant of Gometra in 1674. In the Isle of Man the name has become Quarry and in Ireland it is Gorey. A leading figure of the name was Major General Lachlan Macquarie (1761-1824) Scottish soldier and Governor of New South Wales. Known as the 'Father of Australia', he has given his name to the Lachlan and Macquarie Rivers, and to the Macquarie island.
