Webb Coat of Arms / Webb Family Crest

The surname of WEBB was derived from the Old English WEBBE - meaning the weaver. The name was familiar to medieval documents throughout the country. Early records of the name mention Alger se Webba was documented in 1100 in County Devon.Adam le Webbe of the County of Essex was recorded in the year 1273. Robert le Webbe of the County of Somerset was recorded in the year 1327. Johannes Wybbe of Yorkshire was listed in the Yorkshire Poll Tax of 1379, as was Roger le Webbe, Elyas Webbe, and Robert le Webbe. Nicholas Webbe, was documented in the Wills at Chester in the year 1603. Matthew Webbe of County Cornwall, registered at Oxford University in the year 1577. William Webbe of Chester, was listed in the Wills of Chester in the year 1623. A notable member of the name was Sir Aston Webb, (1849 - 1930), English architect, born in London. He designed the eastern facade of Buckingham Palace, the Admiralty Arch, Imperial College of Science, and many other London buildings. Also noted Matthew Webb, (1848 - 83), English swimmer, born in Dawley, Shropshire, the first man to swim the English Channel. At first the coat of arms was a practical matter, which served a function on the battlefield and in tournaments. With his helmet covering his face, and armour encasing the knight from head to foot, the only means of identification for his followers, was the insignia painted on his shield and embroidered on his surcoat, the flowing and draped garment worn over the armour. In many parts of central and western Europe, hereditary surnames began to become fixed at around the 12th century, and have developed and changed slowly over the years. As society became more complex, and such matters as the management of tenure, and in particular the collection of taxes were delegated to special functionaries, it became imperative to distinguish a more complex system of nomenclature to differentiate one individual from another. The associated arms are recorded in Sir Bernard Burkes General Armory. Ulster King of Arms in 1884.
