Vannortwick Coat of Arms / Vannortwick Family Crest

The Dutch surname of VANNORTWICK was a topographic name meaning the dweller in the village hamlet or town. The name appears to have applied to someone who lived in an outlying settlement, dependent on a larger village, and the terms appears to have been used especially of a dairy farm or salt works. The names of habitation are derived from pre-existing names denoting towns, villages, farmsteads or other named habitations. Other classes of local names include those derived from the names of rivers, individual houses with signs on them, regions and in fact whole countries. As a general rule, the further someone travelled from his place of origin, the broader the designation. Someone who stayed at home might be known by the name of his farm or locality in the parish; someone who moved to another town might be known by the name of his village; while someone who moved to another county could acquire the name of the county or region from which he originated. Other spellings of the name include WIECK, WYCKMAN, VAN WIJK and VAN DER WYCK. Dutchmen who have surnames from towns, cities or districts, are mostly distinguished by the prefix VAN. In the United States the use of capital and initial letters and spaces is optional with the particular family. The Dutch language is most closely related to Low German, and its surnames have been influenced both by German and French naming practices. The preposition 'van' is found especially with habitation names, and the 'de' mainly with nicknames. Compared to other countries, Dutch heraldry is notably simpler, some of the shields bearing only a single charge. Generally speaking one helmet, one shield and one crest has been used, quartering is uncommon and mottoes are rare. Theodore M.A Van WIJK, born on the 12th November, 1916 at Kuils River, South Africa, was the South African University Chancellor (retired). He was awarded the Order of Merit; Order of Bernardo O'Higgins.
