The surname of UHLS is an Ashkenazic Jewish habitation name from the city of ULM in Baden-Wurttemberg, with the suffix MAN. The name would have denoted a native or inhabitant of this place. The name is also spelt ULMAN and was originally derived from the German given name of ULRICH, composed of the element UHL (prosperity, fortune). The name was borne by a 10th century saint, the bishop of Augsburg, whose fame contributed greatly to the popularity of the given name in German and Slavic speaking areas during the Middle Ages. Surnames as we know them today were first assumed in Europe from the 11th to the 15th Century. The employment in the use of a second name was a custom that was first introduced from the Normans. They themselves had not long before adopted them. It became, in course of time, a mark of gentler blood, and it was deemed a disgrace for gentlemen to have but one single name, as the meaner sort had. At first the coat of arms was a practical matter which served a function on the battlefield and in tournaments. With his helmet covering his face, and armour encasing the knight from head to foot, the only means of identification for his followers, was the insignia painted on his shield and embroidered on his surcoat, the flowing and draped garment worn over the armour. A notable member of the name is Liv ULLMAN, born in 1939 the Norwegian actress born in Tokyo. She studied acting at the Webber-Douglas School in London. She made her Broadway debut in 'A Doll's House' (1975) and regular theatre appearances include 'I Remember Mama' (1979) and 'Old Times' (1985). She worked extensively for the charity UNICEF and has written two autobiographical works; 'Changing' (1977) and 'Choices' (1984. German or Teutonic heraldry extended its sphere of influence over central Europe and spread into Scandinavia. It is most notable for its design and treatment of crests, most of which reflect the arms in the charge or tinctures (colours) or both, which is unknown in British heraldry. Teutonic Europe assembled many arms on a single shield, each bearing its corresponding crest on a helmet.
