Taddei Coat of Arms / Taddei Family Crest

This surname of TADDEI is a French surname from a vernacular form of the given name THADDEUS. This is the name given in St. Mark's Gospel to one of Christ's disciples, referred to elsewhere as Judas, son of James. It is an Aramaic form of THADDAI which is of uncertain origin; it may be of Hebrew origin and mean 'Beloved, Desired', but it may also be from the Greek name THEODORE. The name was relatively popular in the Middle Ages because of its auspicious meaning of 'God-given'. Other spellings of the name include THADEE, THADDEY, TADDEO, TADDIO, TADDIA and TADIE to name but a few. French, or rather Norman French, was the language of the aristocracy and the upper classes in England at the time fixed surnames were being developed, it is therefore not surprising that many of our well-known family names are derived from French words. Originally only Christian or personal names were used, and although a few came into being during the 10th century, surnames were not widely used until much later, when people began to realize the prestige of having a second name. TADDEO di BARTOLI (c.1362 - c.1422) was a painter of the Sienese school. Most of his early work was in Pisa, where he was responsible for the frescoes of Paradise and Hell in the Cathedral, and for paintings in the Palazzo Publico. He was also active in Siena, San Gimignano, Perugia and Volterra. 'Descent of the Holy Ghost' in the Church of San Agostino at Perugia is his masterpiece, but he was usually more successful in his smaller pictures. In the Middle Ages the Herald (old French herault) was an officer whose duty it was to proclaim war or peace, carry challenges to battle and messages between sovereigns; nowadays war or peace is still proclaimed by the heralds, but their chief duty as court functionaries is to superintend state ceremonies, such as coronations, installations, and to grant arms. Edward III (1327-1377) appointed two heraldic kings-at-arms for south and north, England in 1340. The English College of Heralds was incorporated by Richard III in 1483-84.
