With his helmet covering his face, and armour encasing the knight from head to foot, the only means of identification for his followers, was the insignia painted on his shield, and embroidered on his surcoat, the draped and flowing garment worn over the armour. Early records of the name mention MARINUS (without surname) who was recorded in the year 1100 in County Norfolk, and Marinus Clericus was documented in the year 1192 in London. Marina (without surname) was documented in County Norfolk in the year 1230 and Walter Maryne appears in the year 1327 in County Surrey. Later instances mentioned, Baptised. Elinor, daughter of James Mariner at St. Dionis Backchurch, London in 1689. John Waller and Mary Marner were married at St. George's, Hanover Square, London in 1795. |
