This surname of LA BOY is a Low German and Danish surname from a Germanic personal name BOIO or BOGO, of uncertain origin. It may represent a variant of BOTHA (meaning messenger). Botha is a very common Afrikaner name in South Africa, where it has been established since 1672. This name, is, of course of Dutch-Frisian origin, but it has also assimilated a French Huguenot name, Boudier, which was brought to South Africa in 1776.
