The name GUTHRIE was derived from the barony of the name in Angus. The first of the name recorded is probably the Guthrie sent to France after Sir William Wallace in 1299. In 1348 Adam de Guthrie witnessed a decreet to a burgess of Dundee.
Jon of Guthere was a juror on the marches of Woodwrae in the year 1388. Sir David Guthrie was armour-bearer to King James III. William of Guthre was the alderman of the burgh of Forfar in 1464 and James de Guthrie was a charter witness in the year 1473. Although the Guthries of Guthrie were closely connected with the lands belonging to the Abbey of Arbroath yet not one of the name is found in the first volume of the Register of the Abbey. An old rhyme designating the main line and principal branches of the surname names them:
'Guthrie o' Guthrie
and Guthrie o' Gaigie
an Guthrie o' Craigie
Later instances of the name record Peter Gotraye who was the burgess of Glasgow in 1601, and John Goathra in recorded in Broomdykes in 1672. Samuel Guthrie (1782-1848) was one of the original discoverers of chloroform. The associated arms are recorded in Sir Bernard Burkes General Armory. Ulster King of Arms in 1884. (That Ilk. Co. Forfar). Before the 1066 Conquest names were rare in England, the few examples found were mainly adopted by those of the clergy or one who had taken holy orders. In 1086 the conquering Duke William of Normandy commanded the Domesday Book. He wanted to know what he had and who held it, and the Book describes Old English society under its new management in minute detail. It was then that surnames began to be taken for the purposes of tax-assessment. The nobles and the upper classes were first to realise the prestige of a second name, but it was not until the 15th century that most people had acquired a second name.
