The name was brought into England in the wake of the Norman Conquest of 1066. Early records of the name mention GERBODO (without surname) who was listed as a tenant in the Domesday Book of 1086. William Gerbode was recorded in 1185 in Wakefield, Yorkshire. Robert Gerbort was recorded in 1273, County Salop and William Garbode, County Norfolk, ibid. John de Gerberdestone was documented during the reign of Edward III (1327-1377). Gerbod de Escals, was recorded in County Lancashire in the year 1400.
