Eagleson Coat of Arms / Eagleson Family CrestThis name EAGLESON was derived from the Old barony of Eaglesham in Renfrewshire. Local names usually denoted where a man held his land, and indicated where he actually lived. Alba, the country which became Scotland, was once shared by four races; the Picts who controlled most of the land north of the Central Belt; the Britons, who had their capital at Dumbarton and held sway over the south west, including modern Cumbria; the Angles, who were Germanic in origin and annexed much of the Eastern Borders in the seventh century, and the Scots. The latter came to Alba from the north of Ireland late in the 5th century to establish a colony in present day Argyll, which they named Dalriada, after their homeland. The Latin name SCOTTI simply means a Gaelic speaker. Dominus Robertus de Heighssam, chaplain, witnessed a confirmation by Alexander filius Walteri of his father's gifts to the church of Paisley in 1239. Barthelmeu de Egglesham, was warden of the New Place of Seneware in the County of Dunfres in 1296. William de Eglisham, rector of the church of Dunbarny in 1300, reappears as William de Egglisham, archdeacon of Lothian in 1316. Henry de Eglishame was one of an inquest on lands in Aberdeenshire in 1335. Magister George Eglishame was physician to King James VI. As Eglesame it is an old surname in the parish of Ballantrae, and Hugh Egleshim appears in Knockreavie in 1784. At first the coat of arms was a practical matter which served a function on the battlefield and in tournaments. With his helmet covering his face, and armour encasing the knight from head to foot, the only means of identification for his followers, was the insignia painted on his shield, and embroidered on his surcoat, the flowing and draped garment worn over the armour. Most of the European surnames in countries such as England, Scotland and France were formed in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The process had started somewhat earlier and had continued in some places into the 19th century, but the norm is that in the tenth and eleventh centuries people did not have surnames, whereas by the fifteenth century most of the population had acquired a second name. |
