The name was of the baptismal group of surnames 'the son of Eglon' an ancient and now forgotten personal name. Early records of the name mention William Egle, 1273, County Cambridge. Gilbert de la Hegle was documented in County Sussex in the same year. Joseph Eagle and Elizabeth Johnson were married at St. George's, Hanover Square, London in 1777. Daniel Miller and Anna Maria Eagles were married at the same church in 1780. An eminent member of the name was John EAGLES (1650-1735) the English composer born in London. He became master of the King's Band of Musik in 1700, composed the music for the coronation of Queen Anne and published many volumes of theatre music, songs and masques. Two other brothers, Henry (1652-1742) and Thomas (1652-1735) were violinists, and although Henry achieved success in Paris, little is known of Thomas except that he played in London taverns.
