Eagles Coat of Arms / Eagles Family Crest

The surname of EAGLES has the associated arms recorded in Sir Bernard Burkes General Armory. Ulster King of Arms in 1884. The name was of the baptismal group of surnames 'the son of Eglon' an ancient and now forgotten personal name. Early records of the name mention William Egle, 1273, County Cambridge. Gilbert de la Hegle was documented in County Sussex in the same year. Joseph Eagle and Elizabeth Johnson were married at St. George's, Hanover Square, London in 1777. Daniel Miller and Anna Maria Eagles were married at the same church in 1780. An eminent member of the name was John EAGLES (1650-1735) the English composer born in London. He became master of the King's Band of Musik in 1700, composed the music for the coronation of Queen Anne and published many volumes of theatre music, songs and masques. Two other brothers, Henry (1652-1742) and Thomas (1652-1735) were violinists, and although Henry achieved success in Paris, little is known of Thomas except that he played in London taverns. This surname is most common in Gloucester and Warwickshire. A certain Solomon Eagles, who was a Quaker musician in London in the second half of the 17th century, was also known as Eccles, and may well have been of Huguenot origin. The Bristol family of this name are probably descended from a certain William Eagles, burgess in 1630. As Bristol traders, they also acquired estates in Carolina whence the name became established in North America. Surnames before the Norman Conquest of 1066 were rare in England having been brought by the Normans when William the Conqueror invaded the shores. The practice spread to Scotland and Ireland by the 12th century, and in Wales they appeared as late as the 16th century. Most surnames can be traced to one of four sources, locational, from the occupation of the original bearer, nicknames or simply font names based on the first name of the parent being given as the second name to their child. The eagle depicted in the arms is the emblem of fortitude and magnaminity of mind. The Romans used the figure of an eagle for their ensign, and their example has been often followed. It is the device of Russia, Austria, Germany and the United States of America and the Emperors of France.
