What is the difference between a Coat of Arms and Family Crest ?

Most people refer to a Family Crest and Coat of Arms to mean the same thing. However, the crest is the portion of the coat of arms that is above the helmet in the mantling. Therefore, the terms "crest" or "family crest" are inaccurate when referring to the entire coat of arms. But, still most people use them interchangeably to mean the same thing.
