This surname was a baptismal name 'the son of Dodd' an ancient although now forgotten personal name which belonged to an old Shropshire family. The name is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as DODO (without surname) and Alwinus Dodesone was recorded as a tenant in County Wiltshire. Other records include Bededict Dodde, 1273 County Wiltshire, and William Dadd was recorded in Cornwall in 1275. Magota Dodson of Yorkshire was listed in the Yorkshire Poll Tax of 1379. Daud de Setel was recorded in the year 1448 in the County of Yorkshire. Richard Dade and Hannah Wilkinson were married at St. James's, Clerkenwell, London in the year 1705. The name was taken to Ireland by settlers who settled in County Sligo in the late 16th century. The name is now scattered, although mainly found in counties Armagh and Down. Occasionally the name is a synomyn of Dowd in Ulster. Ireland was one of the earliest countries to evolve a system of hereditary surnames. They came into being fairly generally in the 11th century, and indeed a few were formed before the year 1000. At first the coat of arms was a practical matter which served a function on the battlefield and in tournaments. With his helmet covering his face, and armour encasing the knight from head to foot, the only means of identification for his followers, was the insignia painted on his shield, and embroidered on his surcoat, the draped and flowing garment worn over the armour. The name remained fairly widespread and in frequent use in England until the 14th century. It seems to have been originally a byname. The Dod family of Edge, near Malpass, Cheshire, have held lands there since the late 12th century. Cadogan Dod made a grant of lands there circa 1180, and a direct line has been traced till the fourteenth century. In many parts of central and western Europe, hereditary surnames began to become fixed at around the 12th century, and have developed and changed slowly over the years. As society became more complex, and such matters as the management of tenure, and in particular the collection of taxes were delegated to special functionaries, it became imperative to distinguish a more complex system of nomenclature to differentiate one individual from another.
The associated arms are recorded in Sir Bernard Burkes General Armory. Ulster King of Arms in 1884.
