Dabney Coat of Arms / Dabney Family Crest

This surname was a locational name derived from various places in northern France. A noted family from Saint-Martin d'Aubigny in Normandy, emigrated into England in the wake of the Norman Invasion of 1066 with William the Conqueror. They were the founders of the earls of Arundel, and the first of the name on record appears to be Nigel de Albengi de Albingi who was recorded in Berkshire in the year 1086.

The acquisition of surnames in Europe has been affected by many factors, including social class and social structure. On the whole, the richer and more powerful classes tended to acquire surnames earlier than the working classes and the poor, while surnames were quicker to catch on in urban areas than in rural areas. These facts suggest that the origin of surnames is associated with the emergence of bureaucracies. As long as land tenure, military service, and fealty were matters of direct relationship between a lord and his vassals, the need did not arise for fixed distinguishing epithets to mark out one carl from another. But as societies became more complex, and as such matters as the management of tenure and in particular the collection of taxes were delegated to special functionaries, it became imperative to have a more complex system of nomenclature to distinguish one individual from another.

Willelmus Albineus Brito appears in 1116 in County Sussex, and William Daubenny was recorded in 1212 in Scotland. William de Aubenei was documented in County Nottingham in 1273, and Ordnell de Daubeney was recorded in County Somerset during the reign of Edward III (1327-1377). Ascelina Daubeny of Yorkshire, was listed in the Yorkshire Poll Tax of 1379. Later instances of the name mention Olyver Dawbney and Anne Forde who were married at St. Dionis, Backchurch, London in the year 1540.
