The name was brought to England in the wake of the Norman Conquest of 1066, and is familiar to Norfolk and Suffolk. Early records of the name mention William de Blundeville, 1273 County Norfolk. The process had started somewhat earlier and had continued in some places into the 19th century, but the norm is that in the tenth and eleventh centuries people did not have surnames, whereas by the fifteenth century most of the population had acquired a second name. There is an epitaph on a gravestone at Newton Church, County Norfolk which reads: 'Here lyeth Patience, the wife of Robert King, and daughter of Thomas Blundevyle, who lived vertuously and died religiously, Jan 7th, 1638'.
