Bleasby Coat of Arms / Bleasby Family Crest

The surname of BLEASBY was a locational name 'of Bleasby' a spot in County Lincolnshire. It was originally a Norman name, derived from the Scandinavian BLIS meaning the dweller by the white sandy ground. Local names usually denoted where a man held his land, and indicated where he actually lived. Habitation names are derived from names denoting towns, villages, farmsteads or other named places, which include rivers, houses with signs on them, regions, or whole counties. The original bearer of the name who stayed in his area might be known by the name of his farm, or the locality in the parish; someone who moved to another town might be known by the name of his village; while someone who moved to another county could acquire the name of that county or the region from which he originated. The name was probably brought to England in the wake of the Norman Conquest of 1066. Many of the early names recorded in medieval documents denote noble families but many also indicate migration from the continent during, and in the wake of, the Norman invasion of 1066. There was a constant stream of merchants, workmen and others arriving in England during this time. In 1086 the Record of Great Inquisition of lands of England, their extent, value, ownership and liabilities was made by order of William The Conquerer. It is known as the Domesday Book. Early records of the name mention Blesebi and Blasebi, listed as tenants in the Domesday Book of 1066. Blisebi (without surname) was documented in County Lincolnshire in 1115 and Edward Bleaseby was recorded in the year 1273. Thomas Bleasby of Yorkshire, was listed in the Yorkshire Poll Tax of 1379. The associated arms are recorded in Sir Bernard Burkes General Armory. ( Arms of Blesebi ).
