An old rhyme which celebrates the localities in Liddesdale and Eskdale most noted for game gives prominence to'Billhope-baes for bucks and raes' Early records of the name mention a Patrick Bylhope who witnessed a declaration dated in the year 1436, and William Billop appears in Dumfries in the year 1516.
