This surname was a locational name 'de Belmont', or 'de Beaumont'. Roger de Belmont appears in Domesday as a chief tenant in Counties Gloucestershire and Dorset, probably a near kinsman of the Conqueror. There are five places in Normandy of the name Beaumont - meaning beautiful mountain. Generally speaking the name is of Norman extraction, and was brought into England in the wake of the Norman Conquest of 1066. Early records of the name mention BEAUMUND (without surname) documented in 1175 in County Essex. The name was recorded in County Suurey, as BELMUNT (without surname) in the year of 1212. Mathaeus de Bello Monte of the County of Devonshire was recorded in the year 1272 and William Beumunt of the County of Oxfordshire was documented in 1273. Willelmus Beumond of Yorkshire, was listed in the Yorkshire Poll Tax of 1379. Thomas Haywarde and Agnes Beymand were married in London in the year 1583. Since the dawn of civilisation the need to communicate has been a prime drive of all higher mankind. The more organised the social structure became, the more urgent the need to name places, objects and situations essential to the survival and existence of the social unit. From this common stem arose the requirements to identify families, tribes and individual members evolving into a pattern in evidence today. In the formation of this history, common usage of customs, trades, locations, patronymic and generic terms were often adopted as surnames. The demands of bureaucracy formally introduced by feudal lords in the 11th century, to define the boundaries and families within their fiefdoms, crystallized the need for personal identification and accountability, and surnames became in general use from this time onwards. A notable member of the name was Francis Beaumont (1584-1616) who was the English playwright and collaborator, and with John Fletcher they wrote many plays and stories. Thomas Wright and Grace Beamond were married at St. George's Chapel, Mayfair, London in the year 1748. The name was in Scotland at an early date and Roger de Bellemont, was chancellor of William the Lion. He was bishop of St. Andrews in 1198, built the castle there, and died in 1202. Richard de Bello Mont had a grant of the barony of Crail in Fife circa 1210. Alexander Bevmonde witnessed a charter by the earl of Huntlie in 1367.
