This name was BARRIE was brought into England from France, with the Norman Conqueror in 1066. It was a locational name meaning 'one who lived in the outer walls of the town or city'. Nest de Barri was documented in 1185 in County Sussex, and appears to be the first of the name recorded. Richard Barri appears in 1195 in County Suffolk. Other records of the name mention John de Barry, who was documented in County Somerset, during the reign of Edward III. (1327-1377). William Barry of Yorkshire, was listed in the Yorkshire Poll Tax of 1379. Sir Charles Barry (1795-1860) who with A.W.Pugin, was the Architect of the English Houses of Parliament. BARRIE families originally came to Ireland as settlers from Wales. In 1183 Phillip de Barri, the first of the name in Ireland, received a grant of lands and was connected with the principal Anglo-Norman Conquerors of Ireland, through his mother. His descendants formed septs according to ancient tradition, two of them being established in the baronies of Barrymore and Barryroe in County Cork. Ireland was one of the earliest countries to evolve a system of hereditary surnames. They came into being fairly generally in the 11th century, and indeed a few were formed before the year 1000. The Irish prefixes of Mac (son of) and O (grandson or descendant of) gave rise at an early date, to a set of fixed hereditary names in which the literal patronymic meaning was lost or obscured. These surnames originally signified membership of a clan, but with the passage of time, the clan system became less distinct, and surnames came to identify membership of what is called a 'sept' of people all living in the same locality, all bearing the same surname, but not necessarily descended from a common ancestor. Adoption of the name by people who did not otherwise have a surname and by their dependants was not uncommon. Later, nicknames were in some cases to supersede the original clan names. The associated arms are recorded in Sir Bernard Burkes General Armory. Ulster King of Arms in 1884.
