Banwart Coat of Arms / Banwart Family Crest

Research into the family name of BANWART revealed that it can be traced back to Switzerland. The Celtic population of this area were named Helvetians by the Romans who conquered this region by l5BC. During the medieval times families of this name BANWART were located in this country where the name came from humble beginnings but gained a significant reputation for its contribution to medieval society. The name has very many variant spellings which include BANWARTE, BANNWERT, BANWARTH AND BANNVART.

In l033, the people of Burgundy joined the Holy Roman Empire and when it became a part of France in l300 the Helvetians part remained Swiss. The Banwarts became one of the notable families of the region, and the family was raised to the nobility. An early instance of the name was FIDEL VON BANWARTH, who as a prominent and influential justice official in Bavaria was ennobled in l787.

During the Reformation, Switzerland was not affected by the religious strife that devastated most of Europe; cities such as Geneva were in the middle of the Reformation and John Calvin became prominent as a Protestant reformer, founding Protestantism. Many people of Swiss origin emigrated from there to seek their fortune in other parts of the world. In the United States they particularly populated the states of Pennsylvania, New York, Illinois, Ohio, Texas and California. Amongst those settlers was Charles A.Bannvart who came to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in l856.

In the Middle Ages heraldry came into use as a practical matter. It originated in the devices used to distinguish the armoured warriors in tournament and war, and was also placed on seals as marks of identity. As far as records show, true heraldry began in the middle of the 12th century, and appeared almost simultaneously in several countries of Western Europe.
