The following is an excerpt from MacLysaghts "Irish Families"
Families called Ashe settled in Counties Kildare and Meath in the fourteenth century and they are recorded in the sixteenth century as amongst the leading gentry there; one was M.P. for Trim in 1613 and another was poll-money commissioner for Co. Meath in 1661. In recent times they are chiefly located in Kerry and Antrim. Thomas Ashe (1884-1917), the I.R.A. officer whose long hunger-strike ending in death and a far reaching effect, was born in Co. Kerry. The well-known Limerick and Kerry name Nash is etymologically of the same origin.
