ARGUILE or Argyll (Duke of Argyll). The family held their allegiance to the CAMPBELL'S who were known as the race of Diarmid, for centuries the most powerful influence in Argyll and the West of Scotland. In the 13th century Archibald Campbell obtained the Lordship of Lochlow through his marriage with the daughter of the King's treasurer, and for a long period thereafter, the Campbells of Lochlow formed one of the chief branches of the clan. Archibald, Ist Duke of ARGYLL (died. 1705) was the son of the 9th Earl of Argyll and an active promoter of the Revolution. He was created Duke of Argyll in 1701. The use of fixed surnames or descriptive names appears to have commenced in France about the year 1000, and such names were introduced into Scotland through the Normans a little over one hundred years later, although the custom of using them was by no means common for many years afterwards. During the reign of Malcolm Ceannmor (1057-1093) the latter directed his chief subjects, after the custom of other nations, to adopt surnames from their territorial possessions, and there created 'The first erlis that euir was in Scotland'. Over the centuries, most people in Europe have accepted their surname as a fact of life, as irrevocable as an act of God, however much the individual may have liked or disliked the surname, they were stuck with it, and people rarely changed them by personal choice. A more common form of variation was in fact involuntary, when an official change was made, in other words, a clerical error. Among the humbler classes of European society, and especially among illiterate people, individuals were willing to accept the mistakes of officials, clerks and priests as officially bestowing a new version of their surname, just as they had meekly accepted the surname they had been born with.
