The surname of ANTELL was of two-fold origin. It was a baptismal name 'the son of Arnketel' and it was also a locational name 'of Ampthill' a hamlet in the parish of Hursley, a market town seven miles from Bedford. The surname is now strongly represented in the United States. Early records of the name mention Anketel le Mercer, 1273, London.
