Some of the first settlers of this name or some of its variants were: Among the early explorers of the New World was Gonzalo de Acosta, a conquistador who voyaged with Diego García de Moguer and Sebastian Cabot to the Río de la Plata in 1527. Later he accompanied Pedro de Mendoza to Buenos Aires, and Alvar Núñez to Paraguay. Also of note was Juan de Acosta, who assisted Pizarro in the conquest of Peru.
