For generations, Coats of Arms or Family Crests have been a symbol of a family's value and identity. These symbols were first used to identify armored warrior knights in battle. It was hard to tell who was inside a suit of armor, so each warrior chose colors and symbols to represent their clan or family. For generations, these Crests would be passed from parent to child. The full heraldic achievement consists of a shield, supporters, crest, and motto. The design is a unique symbol for an individual family or person, state, or corporation. Such displays are commonly called armorial devices, armorial bearings, heraldic devices, or most simply arms.

COATS OF ARMS... what are they ?
They have been a symbol of a family’s values since times of old. Originally used to identify a warrior knight who was dressed in armor. Some Knights would choose symbols and/or colors to distinguish their armor in battle, since nobody could tell who was inside the suite of armor. These symbols were then passed on from generation to generation and became known as a "Coat of Arms".
A unique heraldic design on a shield or escutcheon or on a surcoat or tabard used to cover and protect armour and to identify the wearer. Thus the term is often stated as "coat-armour", because it was anciently displayed on the front of a coat of cloth. The coat of arms on an escutcheon forms the central element of the full heraldic achievement which consists of shield, supporters, crest and motto. The design is a symbol unique to an individual person, and to his family, corporation, or state. Such displays are commonly called armorial bearings, armorial devices, heraldic devices, or simply armorials or arms.
Also sometimes referred to as a Family Crest, Family Shield, Code of Arms or Arms. A coat of arms is a time honored, graphical display and history of your family surname. Displaying authentic Coats of Arms is a tradition that has withheld the test of time dating back over 750 years. Displaying a Heraldic or Family Crest item can provide an individual with a greater sense of purpose, not only for you, but also for your family members, while emboldening family unity. Displaying an official Coat of Arms, Family Crest, Heraldry, Surname, Genealogy, or Family History item serves as a constant reminder to the bearers of that surname that they have a direct responsibility to uphold the traditions and honor of their family surname.
These heraldic devices were usually recorded in a blazon format. A blazon is basically just a verbal description (usually in Latin) of the heraldic device. Today we use these verbal descriptions to form an actual graphical picture. The downfall of this method is that most of the time the helmet and mantling were not recorded in the blazon. It was usually only the contents of the shield and/or the crest (part above the helmet). Therefore, you will often see us using a generic shield and helmet. But, rest assured, every part that was recorded, we attempt to accurately display. The most common two books for blazons were "The General Armory of England, Scotland and Ireland" and "Rietstap's Armorial General".
